As the self-proclaimed Grillionaire, I am always on the lookout for the next big thing in the barbecue world.
And let me tell you, I have a feeling that 2023 is going to be a sizzling year for BBQ trends. I have done TIRELESS minutes of work preparing for this article. Predicting things is always a gamble, and this article is the first of (hopefully) MANY more new years predictions for the barbecue world.
So, lets take a look together in my smoky mirror ball, and see what trends I THINK will be big time trends in the world of cue.
Without further ado, here are my top five predictions for the barbecue scene in 2023:
Trend #1: Plant-Based BBQ Options'
Vegetarians and vegans, rejoice! In 2023, it's all about inclusivity at the barbecue pit. More and more BBQ joints will be offering plant-based options that are just as smoky and savory as their meaty counterparts. And even carnivores will be impressed by the hearty flavor and texture of these innovative plant-based options.
Pictured above is a 3D Printed Vegan Steak. Now, I know what you're thinking, and it doesn't sound good, but I would bet I could make it tasty! If flavored properly and cooked properly, this could be as good thing! Either way, I think it is a great idea to make space IN the space for plant-based meat options.
Trend #2: Budget-Que BBQ Styles

Inflation got you down? Fear not, BBQ lovers, because in 2023 we'll see a rise in budget-friendly BBQ options. BBQ joints and pitmasters will get creative with their menus, offering more affordable cuts of meat and discount options for larger groups. This might include specials on cheaper cuts of meat that are just as flavorful when cooked low and slow, such as pork shoulder or beef brisket. BBQ enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to try out new and unexpected budget-friendly protein sources, such as quail, rabbit, or even goat.
These alternative meats can be just as tasty as their more expensive counterparts, and they're often more sustainable and humanely raised. So don't worry, you can still get your BBQ fix without emptying your wallet. Plus, with all the money you save on BBQ, you'll have more to spend on sides, drinks, and other goodies at the grill.
Trend #3: Sustainable BBQ Practices

As concerns about the environmental impact of industrial meat production continue to grow, BBQ lovers will seek out restaurants and pitmasters that prioritize sustainability. Expect to see an increase in the use of locally-sourced, humanely-raised meats as well as plant-based BBQ options. This not only benefits the planet, but it also supports small, local farmers and producers who prioritize sustainable and ethical practices.
In addition to choosing sustainable meats, BBQ joints and pitmasters may also adopt eco-friendly practices in their cooking and serving methods. This could include using biodegradable utensils and packaging, recycling and composting, and reducing food waste. So not only will you get to enjoy delicious BBQ, but you'll also be doing your part to help the environment. It's a win-win for everyone.
Trend #4: BBQ Fusion Cuisine

Get ready for some serious flavor explosion, because in 2023, BBQ fusion cuisine is where it's at. Imagine Korean BBQ tacos, Chinese BBQ pork bao buns, or even BBQ pizza. The possibilities are endless, and the results are sure to be mouthwatering.
BBQ has always been a melting pot of flavors and techniques, and in 2023 we'll see a rise in innovative fusion dishes that bring together the best of different culinary traditions. BBQ fusion cuisine allows pitmasters and chefs to showcase their creativity and bring new and unexpected flavors to the BBQ scene.
Plus, with the rise of food delivery and virtual cooking classes, it's easier than ever to try out these fusion dishes from the comfort of your own home. So don't be afraid to step out of your BBQ comfort zone and try something new and delicious in 2023.
Trend #5: BBQ and Technology
Move over, Silicon Valley, because the BBQ industry is about to get a high-tech makeover. In 2023, we'll see a rise in BBQ technology, from smart grills that can be controlled from your smartphone to automated smokers that can produce perfectly cooked, moist meat every time. This convergence of industrialization and BBQ is sure to bring some amazing flavors and convenience to the world of BBQ.
One example of this technology is the "smart grill," which allows users to control and monitor their grill remotely through a smartphone app. These grills often come with features such as temperature control, meat probes, and even recipe suggestions. This means you can set your grill to the perfect temperature and receive alerts when your food is ready, all without ever leaving your couch. AND THOUGH most of this technology exists already, we will see a rise in the perfection of this technology with new additions to it.
Another example is the automated smoker, which uses sensors and algorithms to ensure perfectly cooked, moist meat every time. These smokers can be programmed to cook at a specific temperature and humidity level, and they'll even shut off automatically when the meat is done. This takes the guesswork out of smoking and allows even novice pitmasters to produce professional-quality BBQ.
So if you're a BBQ enthusiast who loves both good food and gadgets, 2023 is going to be a great year for you. With all the new BBQ technology on the horizon, it's never been easier to enjoy delicious, perfectly cooked BBQ at home.
So there you have it, folks, my top five BBQ trend prediticons for 2023. Get ready for a year of plant-based options, budget-friendly BBQ styles, sustainable practices, fusion cuisine, and BBQ technology.
Until next time, make sure you eat well, do well, and serve good food!
